Nickolay E. Mladenov is a Member of the European Parliament from the EPP-ED Group, elected in Bulgaria.
He sits on the Foreign Affairs and the Internal Market Committees. Mr Mladenov is also the First Vice Chair of the Permanent ad-hoc Delegation for Relations with Iraq and is also a member of the European Parliament’s delegations for Israel and Afghanistan. Before joining the European Parliament in 2007, he worked with political parties and national parliaments in the greater Middle East, including Afghanistan and Yemen. In 2006 he was a consultant for the Security and Foreign Affairs Committees of the Iraqi Council of Representatives. Mr. Mladenov also has election related experience with the EU, OSCE and other organisations in Albania (1997), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1998), Ukraine (2004 and 2007), Egypt (2005) and Pakistan (2008).
Previously he was a Member of the Bulgarian National Assembly (2001-2005) where he was Vice Chair of the European Integration Committee and served on the Foreign Policy Committee. He represented the Bulgarian Parliament to the Constitutional Convention on the Future of Europe.
In 1999 Nickolay E. Mladenov established the European Institute in Sofia (www.europe.bg) - a public policy centre dedicated to supporting the integration of South East Europe into the EU. He served as its first Director until 2001.
Mr. Mladenov he has also worked for the World Bank and in the Open Society Fund.
Mr. Mladenov was educated at King's College London (MA War Studies) and the University of National and World Economy in Sofia (BA & MA International Relations).
In his spare time he assists various charities, including the Gavroche Day Care Centre for Street Children, the Karin Dom Foundation in Varna, and Hospice Miloserdie in Sofia. He also sits on the boards of the Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation (BCAF), and the Gavroche Association in Varna.
